When Chest Pain, Breathlessness or Fatigue Needs Urgent Attention

Research shows that heart attack symptoms can include chest discomfort, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, fainting or pain in the arm, neck, back or jaw. Early treatment can save life. Read a medical overview here: PubMed acute coronary syndrome article.

Not every chest pain is a heart attack. Gas, muscle pain, acidity and anxiety can also cause discomfort. But it is risky to guess at home.

Seek urgent medical help if chest pain is heavy, tight, crushing or lasts more than a few minutes. Also seek help if it comes with sweating, breathlessness, fainting, nausea or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back.

People with diabetes may have unusual symptoms. They may feel extreme tiredness, breathlessness, sweating or mild discomfort instead of strong chest pain.

Breathlessness can also be serious. It may happen because of heart disease, lung disease, anaemia, infection or other causes. Sudden or severe breathlessness needs urgent care.

Fatigue that is new, severe or worsening should not be ignored, especially in people with diabetes, high blood pressure or known heart disease.

Routine lifestyle care is useful for long-term health, but it should never delay emergency care.

The safest rule is simple: if symptoms feel serious, sudden or unusual, get checked quickly.
